Children who come from poor families may be forced to work to support their siblings and parents or supplement the household income when expenses are more than the parent’s earning. It is a huge problem especially in developing countries where parents are unable to generate income due to the lack of employment opportunities or education. Children can be found employed in mines or hawking in the streets to earn money that is used to provide basic necessities such as food and clothing for the family. Children may also be employed in factories to generate income for the family instead of attending school such a practice is a common phenomenon in poverty-stricken regions with large factories set up by international companies. Child labor is commonly found in all the developing Countries where poverty is usually found. Many families with extreme poverty are compelled to send their children for work who contribute something for the family income. Children of poor families are forced to work particularly when the working adult members of the family become disabled due to physical and mental deformities, diseases or accident.
A society with many educated people understands the importance of going to school and pursuing dreams. Children have the ability and time to became whatever they aspire to be. Illiteracy, on the other hand, makes it difficult of many people to understand the importance of education. Illiterate people view education as a preserve of the privileged in the society. They will therefore not provide support to children so that they can go to school and build solid foundations for future success. The same view of seen among illiterate parents who prioritize children contributing to the upkeep of the family over going to school. Children that are employed do not have the time to go to school. They spend a lot of time in their workstations as the day and years go by. The lack of education and illiteracy makes them individual with limited opportunities as far as employment is concerned. Education also prepares a person for several challenges in the society and without it, one may turn out to lack the basic skills required to overcome many of life’s problems. An individual who has gone to school may be aware of how to approach certain situations in life without resorting to brute force. An illiterate person, on the other hand, considers force to be the only answer to nearly all the challenges experienced.
Marrying at an early age is a major contributing factor of overpopulation. Young parents are able to sire lot children because they remain fertile for a long time. Having many children with little or no resource to support those leads to child labor. Older children are forced to work in order to help their support the family.
Quality education is expensive. To many parents who live in abject poverty, priority is given to providing food for the family because education is too expensive to afford especially when there are many children to pay school fees for. Instead of letting children stay a home because there is lack of money to send them to school, parents option to have them working as unskilled laborers to help support the family. Some parents can also only afford basic education which means that children will be forced to look for work since they cannot pursue their education further.
Some industrialists (owners of the fireworks, match-box units, glass and brassware industries etc.) Believe that their units are able to maximize profit because of the appointment of child Laborers whose labor is very cheap and are easily available. Familial factors Family disorganization often leads to child labor. Extreme poverty and economic of the family as it is already mentioned, is one of the factors favoring child labor. Divorce, desertion, rigid family relations, and cruelty at home, parent child conflicts, criminal tendencies of parents often compel children to run away from the unpleasant family environment. In order to while away their time and need of money for their survival such children finally get into some jobs.
It is important for parents and children to understand that they can work hard and make something great of themselves. Low aspiration by parents and children is a major cause of child labor because in such a situation, being employed in a local factory, or selling grocery in the streets is the normal way of life. To these types of children and parents, success only belongs to a certain region or group people. They do not aspire to become professional in the society or great entrepreneurs. It is a mindset that forms the very foundation of child labor. Children constitute the treasury of future wealth of any nation. But unfortunately in India, public awareness is not there regarding the social evils such as child abuse and child labor. No organization has launched an effective movement at the all India level to rouse the Consciousness of public regarding its responsibility towards children.
Though the Government has a constitutional obligation and a moral responsibility to promote the welfare of the children; it is not serious about the problem of child Labor. Half- hearted legislations undertaken in this regard are a big failure. The government bureaucracy is also indifferent to the problems of the working Children. Working Conditions of Child Laborers Not only working children are found throughout India, but even horrible working exist everywhere. Nowhere in India are the working conditions of children found to be satisfactory. Children who pushed to the inevitable conditions of physical work in urban and industrial areas suffer from various hardships. They work under in tolerable conditions, in private houses as domestic servants; in tea-shops and restaurants as vessel-washers and waiters; in mining and industrial units as young laborers; in garages as cleaners, in shop as salesmen, and so on. Some work in dangerously polluted factories while a few others toil near furnaces which burn at a temperature of 1400 degree centigrade. These children not only work under insanitary conditions but also are made to stay in unhygienic shelters. A large number of workers are huddled in small rooms under in human conditions. These rooms are compartments of substandard, ill-ventilated, insanitary and poorly lighted shelters. These dwelling places are virtually unfit for human habitation. Child workers who are made to toil for long hours under hazardous conditions hardly maintain good health. Many of them suffer from lung diseases, tuberculosis, chronic stomach pain, eye diseases, asthma, bronchitis, back pain, skin diseases, typhoid etc. working conditions of these children are so horrible that some get injured and even disabled in fire accidents.
The industrial revolution was the transition to new manufacturing processes in the period from about 1760 to sometimes between 1820 and 1840. This transition included going from hand production methods to machines, new chemical manufacturing and iron production processes, the increase use of steam power, the development of machine tools and the rise of the factory system. Textile were the dominant industry of the industrial revolutions in terms of employment, value of output and capital invested; the textile industry was also the first to use modern production methods. An economic recession occurred from the late 1830s to early 1840s when the adoption of the original innovations of the industrial revolutions, such as mechanized spinning and weaving, slowed and their markets matured. Innovations developed late in the period, such as the increasing adoption of locomotives, steamboats and steamship, hot blast iron smelting and new technologies, such as the electrical telegraphy, widely introduced in the 1840s and 1850s, were not powerful enough to drive high rates of growth. Rapid economic growth began to occur after 1870, springing from a new group of innovations in what has been called the second industrial revolution.
